We all have had that lesson at some point in our lives. You were sat down in front of a television or a projector and shown footage of why drinking and driving is bad for you. It may have been a documentary or a new story on how a person’s life was ended tragically as a result.

The same goes for texting while driving. This can be a huge safety hazard because you’re taking your eyes off the road. According to the National Safety Council, texting while driving has led to 1.6 million crashes each year.

This has become such a major risk that almost every state across the country has made this type of activity illegal. What you may not know, however, is that there are other ways you can be creating these dangerous scenarios.

This all centers around the modern staple of multitasking. Almost everyone has a phone they can’t keep their hands off of, even while inside a moving vehicle. This creates a real distraction by making you look at anything other than the road ahead. Whether you’re texting or navigating through your social media, it takes your focus away from your surroundings.

Another case is when you take your hands off the steering wheel for any reason, like if you’re eating or drinking, fiddling with a GPS device, or reaching for something in your bag. The obvious solution to this illustration is to simply refrain from all this while you’re driving. Also, make sure your GPS is programmed correctly before you begin your commute.

Speaking of drinking, many people don’t know that having to urge to pee while driving can be just as bad as having alcohol in your system. It creates a cognitive distraction because your mind is thinking more about your need to go to the bathroom.

You may start to make reckless decisions while you’re driving as it begins to cloud your judgment. You’re mentally and physically focusing on holding it in, which takes a lot of your concentration away. That’s why you should never let it reach that level of desperation. Instead, stop to use a public restroom as soon as possible.

While keeping your eyes on the road is easier said than done, you need to resist any temptation and focus on what you need to be doing. By taking all of this into consideration, you’ll be able to react quickly to any unexpected situations. You may be able to avoid getting into an accident.
